Light Up Your Business
An out of the ordinary thought that appears in a flash can improve your business. A spark of intuition, a mental prompt, may be just what you need to create a leap for your business. So ever wonder how to improve your business intuition?
Because entrepreneurs are busy, caught up in the day to day aspects, it’s easy to overlook these random thoughts. But they are worthy of your attention. Your hunch can take your business to the next level.
You may dismiss a break through idea simply because it’s unusual. Or maybe it’s out of context. Or the idea doesn’t neatly fit in with your everyday schedule.
So, how do you tell an innovative idea from a crazy one?
Once you set your mind to notice intuitive sparks they become easy to identify. If you never really considered how intuition can benefit business, here are ways those hunches show up.
- Pay attention. Notice ideas that are slightly out of the ordinary. It’s easy to dismiss these gut feelings. Those “strange ideas” can lead to a business breakthrough.
- Unrelated. Out of context random thoughts appear when you step away from the busy work. They’ll pop up when you are doing something completely unrelated. Make a note of those random thoughts. Many of my business coaching clients keep an ideas journal.
- Contrary to your expectations. Your business intuition may focus on something that’s contrary to your expectations. You may expect Jim to offer you the opportunity of a lifetime. However, Tom, who you dismissed, appears with an irresistible offer. Don’t ignore Tom’s offer simply because you expected one from Jim.

Intuitive thoughts correlate with your skills. You’re more likely to improve your business intuition when you’re doing work that is meaningful to you. Experience and knowledge often works hand in hand with gut feelings. That’s because your subconscious mind may pick up a clue that your conscious brain has overlooked.
It appears that the site of fast, automatic, unconscious cognitive operations—from where a solution materializes all of a sudden—lies in the basal ganglia, linked to but apart from the cortex. These studies provide a telling hint of what happens when the brain brings the output of unconscious processing into awareness.
So, when that intuitive thought appears, take notice, write it down, and then consider implementing your new idea. Take advantage of your brain’s insight. Your subconscious mind is constantly at work.
You and your business will benefit from your intuition. Your business intuition can surface at any moment.
- An opportunity you didn’t expect. It’s like an instant gift from your brain.
- Saved from making a costly decision or taking a wrong action just because it didn’t feel right.
- The unexpected surprise: you get what you were asking for.
Don’t ignore those flashes of insight. The more you pay attention, and act, the more benefits you’ll bring to your business.
Recognizing and acting on intuition can be tough for entrepreneurs. You are focused on accomplishing tasks, making everything work, connecting with your team and customers, and generally keeping all the balls in the air. You use your analytical side to evaluate, strategize and accomplish goals.
Intuitive sparks can seem counterproductive because they can’t be analyzed. With everything on your plate it’s easy to dismiss something that doesn’t make sense. And when your confidence is low, it’s easy to ignore those mental nudges.
The first step to improve your business intuition is by opening your mind to their presence. Start noticing when they happen. Pay attention.
